Is It Better To Have One Or Two Canaries In A Cage

Is it better to have one or two canariesFor a new beginner that wants to keep canary birds as pets or for breeding purpose often wonder and want to know is it better to have one or two canaries in a cage at a time as some expert research have classified canary birds as being solitary birds.

Which means they do very well on their own, other research says canary birds will fight each other if they are put together in one cage.

If you are getting two male canary birds they should be kept in two separate cages because if you put two male canary birds together in one cage they will most likely fight themselves.

And it can sometimes lead to serious injuries or even death of one of the birds so two males in one cage is a bad idea.

Ideally you should put each bird in a different cage with enough space and room for the bird so that they can fly around and play.

Each bird in its own cage should not be able to see each other this way they will compete for songs as both birds will want to sing more than the other.

Canaries love to live alone rather than with other canaries as they are territorial when it comes to small space.

It is relatively a low maintenance bird that is easy to care for.

Female canary birds can be placed together in the same cage throughout the year but you will notice that even the female canary bird just like any other animal have their own personality and preferences.

Canary birds will normally respond to the owner as long as you always interact with them while caring for them.

You should make sure they have all the basic things they will need in their cage like toys, fresh water for them to bath with every day, and most importantly their food to make them active and healthy.

The idea is to not make them depressed even if they are alone they need to have something to play with in their cage and they also like to hear and see things that will keep them busy and active

A male canary bird and a female should not be kept together at any time in the same cage unless they are in their breeding season and molting season.

Apart from this season it is not usually advisable to put a male and a female canary bird in one cage as the male canary tend to attack the female bird.

If the birds are in their breeding season which usually starts in late march you can get a separate breeding cage that has a divider in between the cage like a wire mesh.

You should then place the male canary bird on one side of the cage and the female bird on the other.

Then start observing the female bird and once you notice that it has started to build it nest, and the two birds and playing with other or cuddling each other then, you can remove the wire mesh to allow the birds come together.

After this process is done and once the birds start to molt it means their breeding season is over and each bird should immediately be put back to its original cage.

Over time some canaries may learn to live with each other in peace and not squabble with each other over space and territory but it is very difficult to tell which of the birds will be at peace with other birds and which ones will be a fighter.

Reason why a female canary is attacking the male

Canaries are a member of the finch family and to be more specific the canary bird are in the family called Carduelan Finch.

To give more clarity and answer to this subject on why female canary bird is attacking the male.

It is very clear and the reason is simple as we have said canary birds are birds that do well on their own.

They are solitary animal and will often attack any other canary bird that is placed in the same cage with them.

None of the Carduelan Finch are social birds and just like other finch species they don’t like to share their territories with others.

So if for any reason you notice that the female canary bird is attacking the male it is simply a sign that the birds don’t consider themselves to be pals but instead they look at the next bird as an intruder or an enemy.

One of the main reasons the female canary bird might be attacking the male is that the female birds are very protective over their nest and babies and will not hesitate to attack the male birds.

What most breeders do in this case is to remove the male bird to protect everybody.

The only exception to this will be during their initial mating and breeding season.

This is why experts recommends that you don’t keep two or more canary birds in the same cage as this notion does not promote any form of peace.

No matter how large the cage is and it doesn’t matter the gender of the canary bird the result will most likely be the death of one of the birds and it is usually the weaker bird that dies while the stronger one lives on.

Can a canary bird live alone?

If you intend to keep canary bird as pets you can be assured that they are very easy to care for as they do not require too much attention and they can live up to 10-12 years or more.

Canary birds are not social birds so a single bird will have no problem living alone. This bird is very small in size physically it is between 10-11 centimeters.

Despite the fact that canary pet birds can live alone in its cage you should not forget to provide all the basic things it needs in its cage or else the bird will become bored and inactive.

But note if you are looking to keep canary as a pet bird it is recommended that you should have more than one in the house in different cages.

Canaries don’t like to share space but they are happy and not bored when they have companions in other cages that they see every day just like the way it is with humans.
