Why and how often do canaries poop?

If you are to compare the rate at which a canary bird poop in a day with that of other common pet birds like parakeet and the African grey parrot, you will notice that canaries don’t poop as much.

However, the main reason why canaries poop a lot so often is because most birds including the canary bird have a rapid metabolism rate.

This means that they body is able to ingest and breakdown food at a more faster rate than us humans, which makes them to poop every so often.

Parakeets will poop as much as 40 times in a day while macaw will poop on average 15 time in a day.

And for a pet canary bird you can expect it to poop very often in as much as 15-20 times in a day and depending on how well it feeds and how large the canary bird is.

What should canary poop look like?

One way to quickly know if your canary bird is doing well or not health wise is to look at its droppings or poop.

As a pet bird owner with time, you will get to know how your canary bird poop should appear and look like and so any change in texture and colour is an indication that you need to visit your pet veterinary clinic.

How to clean canary bird poop:

To clean canary poop or any other mess that your canaries makes in their cage is quite simple.

Because most of the canary bird cages sold out there these days have trays at the bottom of the cage which can easily trap poop and food remnants.

With this you can just easily draw out the tray from the bottom of the cage and then dispose of the poop of the bird and then wash the tray properly before putting it back under the cage.

To wash the tray, you can use vinegar and dishwasher liquid soap mixed together with one cup of vinegar and one cup of water.

Bird poop is not supposed to be left for too long as it can attract harmful bacteria and germs.

So we recommend that you clean your canary poop not more than some few minutes after your bird is done excreting.
